Do you think that someone is ever "too old" to start taking a martial arts course or start MA training?

The question is for a 32 year old male.

Do you think that someone is ever "too old" to start taking a martial arts course or start MA training?
no... have you seen like those 300 year old chinese men that do karate and say "waah cha cha!"

lol
Reply:I don't think so... Don't think about the age. Let it do thinking its own problem. No one's too old for something...
Reply:You can start taking a course like that if you're 62 years old if you just want to learn the art. If you're taking it because you want to compete then 32 is near the upper limit of when a person could reasonably start and expect to do well in competition since it would take a number of years to become proficient and gain competition experience.
Reply:32! you are still young - and there are really no limits on you - although to get to a competitive full contact fighting level will take 5 -6 years of heavy training

I train several men and women in their 70s and 80s! I obvioulsy adpat what we do to suit their limits but they love it and one of them an 82 year old man still does some contact sparing with me!!

shop around a little and find a style that suits you - as a late learner you may want a non contact style rather than a contact style and you may want something that doesnt rely on years of flexibility training

alternatively you may like some contact training in which case i suggest do some one on one with a very good instructor so you can experience this in a safe manner

good luck - remember the key is enjoyment
Reply:You are never to old to try something new. The whole "can't teach an old dog new tricks" thing is nonsense. Especially if you have an interest for it!
Reply:You consider 32 OLD?

I don't think anyone is ever too old for anything... it's learning and trying new activities that keeps us young. Go for it!
Reply:No, you can never be "too old" to start taking martial arts lessons.
Reply:i'm an older adult and i recently started the arts. it's fun pushing you body to its limits. the first few times u'll b a little sore. but oh what joy!!
Reply:I would say about 8 years old is too old.
Reply:1) 32 is not too old to start. I have seen 2nd Dans that are in their 70s in Hapkido.

2) At 32 you can still compete effectively...age is not important as health, speed, and ability.

3) you should know that you will have to work harder than the younger students.
Reply:Too old to fight in competition, maybe (check relevant regulations--most allow up to at least 35 with no problem)

Too old to train, no. Though as an official of martial arts I reccomend men over 40 and women over 35 get a full physical before starting and get special tests if needed (women should have a bone density scan each year after 40 if they are training full contact)
Reply:No way! I started at 28.
Reply:Most Japanese Scholar on martial arts argue that rarely does one reach mastery until the mid 50s. Your still a fairly young man you have plenty of time! Consider, many Masters continue practice well past 80. A true martial art is not like western sports where one tries to reach a physical maximum, rather a sound martial art is designed to be a coordinated study for mind body and spirit in balance. Think your too old, you may rather be too young!
Reply:No, you can always try tai-chi if you find everything else too strenuous.
Reply:I started learning MA a few months ago, at 39. The only thing I can say is, do a lot of stretching before the class starts, so you don't injure yourself. The answer is no.
Reply:never
