Jukado by Bruce Tegner,Jeet kune do by Bruce lee,Small circle ju-jitsu by Wally jay and now Gracie Jiu-jitsu and UFC cross training.
Has martial arts reached a stage were no fresh original technques or ideas are forth coming or is it just a case of culling various styles together.
Your thoughts Please.
Martial arts styles: Is there room for new Originals? Or is it just old styles revamped?
There's only so many ways you can kick or punch. There's no infinite number of joint locks. The old masters studied the human body carefully and searched for the ways to use it as effectively as possible. Each found their own different techniques but it's unavoidable that indeed they also developed the same techniques as others. e.g. I practice Capoeïra which is actually the only martial art with african roots. The straigt and side kicks we use are exactly the same as those in karate the round kicks and double round kicks are also featured in TKD or Wu Shu. I think that each way of using the body as a weapon has pretty much been explored. What new masters do when making new styles is basically fusing different styles together in to their own way. A famous example of this is Jeet Kune Do. Each finds their own way in martial arts. The ultimate lesson is to stand above style and techniques.
Reply:I don't think you could make a new "original" style... Hell most of the ones you see today are a mix of others... but are too proud to say it.
Reply:i believe that there is only so many way that the human body can move, so you are going to have similarities in every art, it's a fact of nature..
but as far as original forms, i honestly don't believe we'd see any truly new original styles emerge, history tends to repeat itself in every avenue of life, from clothes to politics, styles come and go and come back again, we may start seeing older styles that may have been almost lost emerge with a vengance once again, but i'd have to agree with the above statement, it'd be hard to come up with something truly original nowadays..

Reply:There is always room for new styles.!!!
Reply:REX KWON DO is fairly new.
But seriously stuff is new within each sport as well without having to call it a new sport. Judo for example the throws used in competition evolve and change. Jujitsu has new techniques, I think the rubber guard and spider guard were modifications. Things change and people who want to capitalize just see the changes and call it a new name. I don't think Bruce Lee really thought of his suff as new it just transcended style
Reply:In 1909 the registrar general of the patents office said 'everything that can be invented has been invented' boy did he get that wrong. So although I am not likely to be the one to discover it I do think that there is something new to come yet, be it from mixing two old to make a new
Reply:Martial arts is definitely reaching the point where there are no fresh ideas or techniques to be learned. Most of today's "new" martial arts are just combinations of older styles. Jeet Kune Do is probably the most prominent example of this, despite it's effectiveness. When Bruce Lee was developing his "new" Martial Art, he admitted many times to just taking bits and pieces from other martial arts to use whatever technique fit a given situation. (Not taking anything away from Bruce Lee, the man was a genius who died far too soon.)
Reply:I don't think there are any really new styles, just variations on existing styles. There is so much overlap among styles now that it impossible to even know how many there are.
Reply:yeh no new styles just different approaches.
Reply:just get any old crap and turn into a fad or a craze and you'll have all the senseless ppl jumping on the bandwagon.and telling everyone thats its unbeatable, thier indestructable.it's all about marketing.
ie:bjj,krap maggot,crapierra.
Reply:new martial arts pop up all the time, as new needs arise, and new ideas are discovered.
there are martial arts that focus on gun disarming for exmaple (tho it's a folish idea, you know someone will do it)
the basics will never change tho, a good front kick to the belly will always be a killer technique.
