How can I get into MMA fighting?

I have always wanted to train in some sort of martial art, but have never had the opportunity. Now I've turned 30 and feel I may have missed the boat on this. The more I watch MMA the more I fall in love with it. I'm not a "fighter", but I love the competition, physicality, endurance, training, and toughness that goes into mixed martial arts. I'm just not sure how to go about getting started or if I'm to old to start training in the first place. I am very active, participate in basketball and soccer leagues, and I feel I could handle it physically. Any suggestions on how to get started?

visit mma.tv for a list of schools near you. find a discpline muay tai or BJJ and start there
Reply:There are camps (Gracie, MIletich, Lion's den, and many more) , but they can be expensive.

In order to do well at MMA events you must be properly trained, both stand-up and grappling, here are some suggestions:

stand up: muay thai, boxing, san shou, kickboxing, shidokan and kyokushen karate.

grappling: brazilian jiu-jitsu (bjj), wrestling, judo, sambo (sambo also has stand-up).

You must learn at least one of each (stand up and grappling), the most common ones are muay thai, bjj , and wrestling. Bear in mind that professional MMA fighters train about 25-30 hours a week.

One you learn those I recommend you participate at local shows, once you turn pro you'll face tougher competition.

Your local gym can help you set up a fight once you are trained, as they are in contact with promoters.

I hope this information helps.

good luck!
Reply:You havent missed the boat, i actually know a guy who started doing BJJ at 30, he trained for 4 years and entered many comps and now has already had two MMA fights at 34

To get started join a MMA gym, some BJJ places also do MMA which i think is better because then you can learn BJJ specifically and enter some grapling comps which is important experiece for MMA, thats all you need, just find a good school and get to training, good luck
