They think I'm too violent?

i have been practising martial arts for over 18 years now and often compete in tournaments and such. However my new girlfriends friends think i'm just a violence prone otherwise (in their opinion) i wouldn't choose such a sport also her parents are wary of me because of my training.

What do people think i could do to show these people martial arts isn't about violence and we don't just enter tournaments to beat each other. i mean for god sakes there are other sports just as violent if not more so out there.

They think I'm too violent?
Your new girlfriend's friends need to get an education about what martial arts is really about. Buy those dumb ditzes some books about it so they shut up and respect you for being so dedicated to a respected sport.
Reply:Try and show them the positives of it like meditating and getting in tune with your body and soul.
Reply:Its great that you practice martial arts, its a form of discipline...not anger and hatred! As long as your girlfriend is happy with you and feels safe around you then you shouldn't worry about what her parents and friends think of you! Talk to your girl and come to a conclusion about this whole issue. If they cant accept you for who you are, then you should just go elsewhere because it doesn't get any better, trust me!
Reply:I always thought the martial arts were more about self defense than aggression. I thought it was about control, concentration and respect as well.

Try to explain the principles of your sport, maybe they are just not informed enough. Enlighten them.
Reply:i see martial arts as self defence and i don't see why ppl would think of it as something dangerous.. if they don't like it than screw them.. if someone tried to hurt your gf and you were with her, wouldn't you use your techniques to keep her safe? and maybe if you taught some basic self defence moves to her than maybe her parents and friends would think other wise about protecting herself when she's alone. I mean it really depends on the person who has the skills, some will use it for hurting others, and some will use it to protect others.. so it really depends on the person.. or so i think
