I want to participate in martial arts but i'm scared of injury, what should i do?
I took martial art (Wushu) for about 5 years and I can tell you from my experience that I love it and hope to get back into it someday when I'm not so busy. Honestly, when I first started out, I was no different from you... I was scared and was totally clueless at the same time. But I faced my fear and gave it my best... And next thing I know, I was breaking boards and moving on to the next belt. Not only are martial arts good for you in terms of physical health, you will meet some really nice people and may just make some new friends there and improve your social life as well. The classes are generally very diverse with males and females from all different backgrounds. So don't let your fear stop you from improving your quality of life by learning something new and exciting like martial arts... Through my five years experience with martial arts, the only injury I've gotten was a broken toe nail. Ouch! Well, not really... So give it a shot!

Best,

Reply:take the classes
Reply:Muay thai is great and when you start off you dont spar hard at all. its really safe i promise. Go in there and tear them apart! I believe in you and everyone to do it. I did it for a long time. its safe i promise =)
Reply:Talk to a martial arts instructor, or some of the students who take the class. Read up on martial arts. They don't start out with the hard stuff right away, you have to learn the easy stuff first. I'm sure it'll go fine.
Reply:well i am in tae kwon do and I am always wearing sparring gear when i spar which is a lot of protection. if this is a non sparing gear sparring thing i guess it is very dangerous so just be careful with it peace out.
Reply:Don't worry! I took martial arts and only got injured when I pushed myself beyond my limits. You definitely won't get injured if you stay within your abilities and just gradually improve your skills, instead of trying things that are too crazy. Like once, we had to stretch and a guy made me stretch too far, and I injured my legs, but I never got injured during sparring or any kicking. I mean, I got skin injuries, like bruises and scratches/scars, but nothing broken. So just stay within your limits.
Reply:There's risk in everything! u can't live ur life scared! Ud never hv any fulfilment! 2 things u can choose from: 1) go for it!! or 2) stay home in bed %26amp; watch tv.
Reply:Do not worry my dear to practice martial arts, it is wonderful and will teach you how to defend yourself, self confidence and you will find your self so calm but all I want you to do is to choose a good instructor who can take care of you. Muay tai is tough for ladies but you can practice Aikido or kung-fu because they are more smoother but if you like muay tai just go a head and do not hesitate. anyway you will not gona sparring like men and if you want to fight just fight a lady like you ;)
Reply:That which does not kill me... Go for it!
Reply:Go through your yellow pages in martial arts, and call the Prof., Sensei or Sifu's and ask if they participate in point systems tournaments, and if your afraid of injuries don't participate in a full-contact tournament. Be safe and learn the basic's and foundation of the style before entering any tournament....GOOD LUCK and ENJOY the COMPETITIONS.
Reply:Muay Thai shouldn’t be your first pick if you are afraid to get banged up, it's a serious sport fighting style. The old saying "if you cant stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen" comes to mind...if you can't accept that injuries, minor ones and major ones can happen in high contact styles like Muay Thai, find something that is more suited to your needs and life style. Everyone can learn a style of martial art that fits them, but the fact is not all styles fit. If your into kick boxing then there other kinds out there like tae kwon do, savate, etc. The thing to remember when looking for a school is, why your looking. Are you wanting to get a great work out, learn how to defend your self, or practice a blood sport. Keeping this stuff in mind and doing research on the styles will help you find the one that’s right for you. Good luck!
Reply:Aikido (especially the softer styles like ki Society or Aikikai) has very little risk of injury. However, if you are drawn to Muay Thai like arts with sparring etc but are afraid you might get injured - either grow some balls (figuratively) or go back to knitting. No risk; no gain.
Reply:What if someone attacked you that would even be worse, defending yourself is something you should learn. My six year old grand daugther is in karate. My grand daugther knocked over a bully with a punch just last week that was trying to terrorize her in school. They are actually cautious when they are training, it looks rough but imagine there is rewards out there for learning how to defend yourself.
Reply:Most people are afraid when they first start. But after having a fist/foot/etc thrown at you over time, you get used to it and stop flinching. The pain will come and go as you get more and more used to it.

When this one female black belt first started in the class I'm in, she would flinch even though the fist was about a foot away from hitting her head. After 3-5 years, I forget how long it took her to get to 1st dan(black belt), she doesn't flinch anymore.

So being afraid will subside in time.
Reply:Suck it up and go in there and train!

Yeah, you're going to get hurt, but you'll also heal up just like you always have, and after you heal up you'll be a lot tougher than you were before. Soon, the coward will be changed into a lioness.
Reply:Go take some fluffy no contact kata martial art. You'll never get touched. If you don't want to get hit don't take anything that promotes real life combat or contact. Go take a basic karate or TKD class, just skip the tag portion of class.
Reply:Getting inot martial arts can be scary. Especially if you are afraid of being hurt.

While there are all sorts of choices you can make, I have found that the best thing for a girl to take is judo. If a girl hit a guy the guy would just get up and hit her back. But if a girl picked up a guy and threw him around about 6 feet or so...he would think twice before getting up and going after her again.
