What martial arts have given you ? people I want your contribution only practitioners?
I talk to a lot of guys who have never studied the Martial Arts and have never even been in a real fight. They all share the same things in common. They walk around with a cloud of doubt hanging over their heads. They are a little embarrased to admit, sometimes, that they are moving through their daily lives with very little self confidence. When they are asked if they know that they have what it takes to protect themselves or a family member if they had to, they usually shrug their shoulders and say, "I don't know".

Martial Arts have given me the confidence I need to walk down the crowded and sometimes dangerous streets of life knowing for certain that I have what it takes.
Reply:Fitness, confidence, flexibility.

I'd say fitness/flexibility started within a month or 2. Confidence I can't pinpoint, maybe 2 years.
Reply:Confidence, tollerance and patience in that order. If you have a good master it shouldnt take long for any of those to come to you. My belief is if everyone in the world took martial arts there wouldnt be any wars
Reply:I've been doing choy li fut kung fu %26amp; yang style tai chi for about 5 years. Benefits I've experienced are numorous: health - I've toned up muscles I didn't even know I had, stress outlet - my day job is very stressful %26amp; this gives me an outlet to punch it out of my system, confidence - whether its only in my head or not; I have a lot more confidence in general, social - its a nice community of healthy people to hang out with. I would say it took about a year to start feeling benefits significantly.
Reply:I'm a Muay Thai Kickboxer, and the trainning is tough, I think it has given me discipline, I'm fit, confidence to do almost anything, and courage that I never thought I had. I noticed these thing about 3 months after I began trainning. But they last a lifetime.
Reply:martial arts has given me strength of mind and body, direction of energy, healing of self and others, harmony with the universe, adapt with the elements of nature, and finally enlightment.
Reply:Confidence really....about 3 yrs. Since about the time I got my black belt.

I'm less fit now because I slacked off after I achieved the belt, but I'm still more fit than I would be otherwise.

My job has me sitting down in front of a computer all day long. lol
Reply:Everyone should speak of their own style... I study Isshinryu Karate. It took me 3 years to learn the system (kata, waza, kumite, kote kitae, etc) and since then I've practiced and worked it (and even thrown in some of my own ideas) for the past 11. The Isshinryu system has given me.

1. Courage: Self-confidence was always a weak point for me in high school. When I jointed the karate club in college, I didn't know what to expect. Well, expect the unexpected, by the time I learned the Isshinryu system, I had courage in all facets of my life. I'm now not frozen in fear of being wrong.

2. Physical Health: The Isshinryu system is an excellent why to remain physically active, burning off fat, and building muscle which will benefit you throughout your life.

3. A method of Self-Defense: I have no doubt of my abilities to protect myself and my family and friends if an emergency situation arises.

4. Perspective: One of the "intelliegences" humans can develop is spacial intelligence. Karate has given me perspective on many things through the precepts. (Boxing Precepts of Karate) The Eye must see all sides. The Ear must hear all directions. The body must be able to change directions at any moment. Unbalance is like a weight.

--------I"m sure there is more I've gained from my study of Isshinryu karate. As a martial style, it has strengths and weaknesses, but a martial style is like a language. If you speak Spanish and I German, we can find a translator and understand each other. If I speak Italian and you don't speak (without a style) we can't communicate. Even Bruce Lee (who spoke of the dissintigration of "style") spoke from the Wing Chun language.
Reply:Iv'e been training for 15 years. The benefits come gradually so it's impossible to say when they started. I have more self confidence %26amp; I'm able toi stay calmer in difficult circumstances. I have also become physically stronger despite being at the age where strength usually decreases.
Reply:when I was at school, I was easy at "going off at people"...and I had very little self control over my self...when I did kempo in the first few months i got quite confident and I learnt to control my behaviour through kempos discipline.

from then on, it also gave me a more open mind about people and where they come from in terms of agression or physical violence.

I have done some Muay Thai for several months, and It gave me the confidence to even improve myself some more, and that theres always another level to attain in terms of fitness or status quo.

It also makes me feel safe and strong, and if I have to, I have what it takes to push myself into an extreme situation and be able to manage it.

flowers sympathy
