Without competitive "sportative" martial arts outlets today, do you really think any unarmed MAs would exist?

Ok, guilty as charged- I got this line of thought from the "savate" episode of human weapon.

I'm neutral on the show but the point is this. A martial art designed over a century ago durng a specific time with specific real life application in mind. the streets changed, the art changed, the art survived because a competitve outlet arose for it.

Obviously the sportative outlet is not the exact same thing now as it was when it was created.

This model can be applied to almost every other MA. BJJ has techniques that are not allowed in the "cage" "ring" "octagon". but that doesn't mean they are not part of the system. People chose to focus on what they want to get out of the art.

Do you really think there would be "boxers" today if there were no sportative outlet?

or muai thai?

or san da?

traditionalists- no traditionalists who don't train realistically are so quick to **** on MMA, but even though mma is not a free for all to the death...cnt'd.

i want to punch you in the face

and maybe kick you in the balls but im not sure if i would go that far
Reply:This site is a Blast...
Reply:Ab$olutely. We'd be stuck with media exposure of the karate kid and wuxia movie sort. Plus the best MA people would have to get real jobs.
Reply:Honesty yes, I think that martial arts would have survived.

However it would be plagued by more charlatans, frauds, and misinformation than today. People are still fascinated by the whole mysticism of martial arts. They would sign up to learn the secrets of Dim-Mak and No Touch Knockouts and actually believe in their skills since they would never really put them to use against resisting opponents. Heck, even with all the information and examples out there today, given the plethora of information out refuting and debunking many frauds, both in technique and claimed rank (and/or lineage), people continue to still sign up for them.

People are gullible. Period.

I myself believe that if you can't trust your skills to work in a sporting competition, how to do expect them to work in real life? Pressure testing is what it's all about.

Personally I have had to take a step back from the competitive side of martial arts due to a few serious injuries over the years of training, but every now and then I do like to jump in and see if I still got it.
Reply:People do martial arts for different reasons, Alot of people dont start martial arts for the competition side of it, yes eventually that is something people want to do but many people who are too old or too young to compete train in martial arts without really thinking about the competitive side, and what about all the self defence classes that dont focus at all on competition?

Fights happon all the time, people want to be able to stand up for themselves if the need arises and not every country is filled with guns like America and i doubt that everyone carries a gun around with them
