Why do people think you know how to fight if you have done martial arts for awhile?

to be any good at fighting you have to train hard every day and i dont but people think because i have done martial arts for so long i would be good at fighting

Has anyone else had this experience its wired

Why do people think you know how to fight if you have done martial arts for awhile?
Let them have it.

Why not?

I am a good street fighter.

I used to fight a lot.

Now it's 7 years I've not have any street fights.

Cause I try to avoid it.

even if someone comes up to me looking for trouble, I make them change their minds just using my tounge.

So let the bad boys think you are a decent fighter.

It's less trouble than they know you suck!
Reply:You know techniques, you might blow at fighting but you know the proper techniques which makes you some what a efficient.
Reply:Because that's one of the main reasons why people take martial arts, to learn how to fight.

Logic dictates that if you are in shape, and train in martial arts you are trained to fight.

What people don't know is that in order to be a good fighter doing martial arts, not only you have to train hard everyday (or at least 4 times a week), but the martial art has to be realistic, with resisting partners and full contact sparring (like boxing, muay thai, kyokushen and shidokan karate, bjj and so on)

I've also experienced this, but it doesn't bother as people respect you, plus you get confidence which never hurts.
Reply:They watch too many movies.
Reply:Why do people think that you are good at basketball just because you have played basketball for awhile?
Reply:It is the natural assumption. ~
Reply:That's funny to me and I have a true story, after my service in the Army, I was just trained on basic fighting techniques and my father was a boxer and he put me through "Golden Gloves" as a kid. So my fighting skills was Boxing and what I learned in the Military. After my service I got hired as a Bouncer at a local Nightclub. My co-bouncer was a so-called Martial arts expert. One night he got attacked and dominated by two guys at the main bar and he was not doing very well. I casually grabbed the one on top and held him in a full Nelson, but my partner still could not recover from his only attacker. So I turned to the side and started kicking the remaining attacker until he rolled face up. I then placed my foot against his throat and had both of them detained. I looked to my Ninja co-bouncer and asked, "Are you okay, Chuck Norris"?

True story!

Reply:I'm a psychology major and people think I can read their minds.

(People can be really stupid.)
Reply:Well, if you're in constant training, you're likely a pretty decent fighter. If you're lazy, and get a rank and then sit on your couch playing Mortal Combat all day, then you're likely a bad fighter. Karate, Kung Fu, Jujitsu, are all like anything else... I haven't played Ms. Pacman in 20 years, if I tried today I wouldn't be as good as I once was.
Reply:to the ignorant thug, martial arts means training on how to fight. it seems like more martial arts are becoming training on how to compete. some people (like you it sounds like) just do it for recreational purposes and never really learn how to fight. so let them think your a badass. just don't be braggin about it, otherwise people will come looking for fights,
