I the bag at least twice a week, 40 of the same punch (jab, cross) then 25 for each (hook, uppercut) I also do a 2 minute freestyle where I test combinations.
I heard it was unsafe to hit the bag if your not training to fight.
It is alright for me to use a heavybag for overall fitness training rather than training for a martial art?
Sounds like a load of crap to me. If you enjoy hitting the bag for exercise, then that's what you should do. Besides, the only danger is that you'll use incorrect form and damage your hand/wrist. As long as you are using good form and wrapping your wrists, then there's little risk.
Reply:Technique is really important when you do it. If you don't do it right, then you could potentially worsen your joints (Especially if you are under 18).
I would advise you to research hand wrapping if you have time to do it before you hit the bag (Or at least make sure you're wearing some good gloves), and research the ways that boxing punches are done. Wikipedia actually has some pretty detailed explanations of how the four are done.
It makes for good cardio, especially if you can throw your breathing off, and adjust to that. I'm actually starting these two workouts at my house ("The pit workout" and the "Bas Rutten MMA workout"), where I have to start using my bag again. I'll be in the same boat as you, even though I do have some training.
Good luck!
Reply:Most martial artists, would probably tell you they are training not to fight. It might be best to get some sort of instruction on proper punching techniques so you don't hurt yourself when you start to develop some real power but I would say that so long as you aren't breaking your own wrist, what can it hurt?
Reply:You don't need a martial art to fight. You need a martial art to counter attacks. Foot placement, body torque, and elbow positioning are important and you need a qualified coach to correct you. Any bad habit not corrected now becomes more difficult to overcome later, so it just makes good sense to invest in the best qualified instructor THAT WILL spend time with you. I have watched thousands come and go. Don't waste your time thinking up short cuts and excuses. Be willing to give it your all. Train hard and have fun!
